The murders in Charleston last week have fueled many accusations of America's racism. From lawmakers to pundits we have heard that these 9 lives lost point to our countries continued racist reality. Some seem to claim that this is proof of a need to do much more to combat racism. While other people almost completely dismiss race as having any part in this tragedy.
I don't think that we can see the direction of our country from the acts of one foolish racist. Racist is a singular noun where racism is a collective verb. When I look at the people I know there are several that I might label racist but the promising thing is how shocking it is to hear them utter racist comments. Another hopeful sign is the fact that almost no one younger than myself expresses racist ideas.
Let's try not to use the actions of one fool to label our whole country.

That one man is a racist, but looking at the influences on him shows us the society's racism.
ReplyDeleteWe as a people are presented with many more non racist ideas than racist ideas, making the right choice is up to us.
