Hypocrisy

Listening to the debt crisis debates I can't help but think that a vast majority of people are acting hypocritically. All this talk about raising taxes on the rich unless your rich is hypocritical. If you support increasing revenue through higher tax rates tax rates should go up across the board. In fact I would go further and say the first step should be to make everyone pay something in federal taxes. Even if the lowest earners only pay 5 dollars a week that way everyone has some skin in the game. If people want programs of any kind form the government they should have to realize that there is a cost involved.

I don't really think we will ever have that kind of a tax system. Which is really a shame because if we really want an honest debate about taxes we should all feel it when they go up or down. Other wise our leaders in Washington are just trying to buy votes and manipulate people.

  1. sounds like you're advocating a flat tax.

i don't believe it's hypocritical to hold that those who have more should pay a higher % of what they have. if someone makes minimum wage, can't get full-time work, can't afford insurance... well, i just think they shouldn't pay the same % of their income in taxes as the person who has an income capable of maintaining multiple homes, multiple cars, staff, private schools, etc. and then has more money left over than the great majority of us will see over a lifetime.

i believe some basic level of income should be non-taxable.

    1. Not a flat tax but it is too easy for someone to say raise the taxes on someone else. I think if we want to raise the taxes on one group of people we should all be willing to pitch in. It is too easy to pit one group against another when we pick and choose who pays. Our country can never be truly united when we allow the government to divide and conquer. We the people can either stand up together for liberty or we can abdicate our position of self government to the clowns in Washington.

  2. Even Adam Smith (the father of capitalism) thought the rich should pay a higher percentage than the poor. He thought they benefited more from the system, so had more at stake in keeping it running smoothly.

    1. The rich already pay a much higher percent. What I am advocating is that everyone should pay something even if it is only a fraction of a percent. After that any increases would happen to all of us.

    2. if somebody can't afford food and housing i'd be willing to let them off where income taxes are concerned.

and i'd be interested in how you figure the rich pay a higher percent.

    3. Pretty simple math 35% is higher than zero percent. Looked at another way the top 2% pay more than 50% of what the government takes in.

    4. ah, yes, well if you look at it that way then it's true that whatever the rich pay is more than is paid in by people who have nothing
